Lenzing celebrates 20 years of Tencel fibre production

Lenzing celebrates 20 years of Tencel fibre production :: WTiN – Executive Intelligence from World Textile Information Network.

lenzing

Lenzing has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Tencel fibre production, which it manufacturers at three sites located in Austria, Great Britain and the US, by holding a commemorative ceremony and customer symposium.

Originally produced at a plant built by British company Courtaulds in Mobile, Alabama, US, the facility was taken over by Lenzing as part of the acquisition of the Tencel Group in 2004.

In recent years it has been technologically upgraded, and annual production capacity has increased to the current level of about 50,000 tonnes of Tencel fibres.

Currently, Lenzing manufactures Tencel fibres at three sites: Heiligenkreuz (Austria) with an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes, Grimsby (Great Britain), featuring a capacity of approximately 40,000 tonnes each year, and the Mobile plant.

A fourth production plant is currently being constructed in Lenzing (Upper Austria). Total annual capacity will amount to 60,000 tonnes, and the facility will be the first second-generation Tencel plant.

On the occasion of the special commemorative ceremony, Lenzing CEO Peter Untersperger emphasised the importance of the Tencel technology.

“Tencel has been the biggest technological step forward in the man-made cellulose fibre industry since the invention of viscose fibres about 100 years ago,” he said. “The development of the fibre over the last 20 years only marks the beginning of a success story which will continue for many decades to come.”

Mr Untersperger added that Tencel ideally combines the need for competitive production costs compared to other fibres with the requirement of ensuring sustainable, environmentally compatible production.
